چکیده

The spectra of far-infrared transmission in Tb3Fe5O12 magnetoelectric single crystals have been studied in the range between 15 and 100 cm−1, in magnetic fields up to 10 T, and for temperatures between 5 and 150 K. We attribute some of the observed infrared-active excitations to electric dipole transitions between ligand-field split states of Tb3+ ions. Anticrossing between the magnetic exchange excitation and the ligand-field transition occurs at the temperature between 60 and 80 K. The corresponding coupling energy for this interaction is 6 cm−1. Temperature-induced softening of the hybrid IR excitation correlates with the increase in the static dielectric constant. We discuss the possibility for hybrid excitations of magnons and ligand-field states and their possible connection to the magnetoelectric effect in Tb3Fe5O12.

Ordinal Excitation of Three-Magnon and Four-Magnon Processes of Magnetostatic Surface Waves in YIG Films

Ordinal excitations of three-magnon decay, modulation instability and four-magnon decay processes of magnetostatic surface waves propagating in a pure yttrium iron garnet film are investigated in accordance with the relationship between the magnetostatic wave frequency and the internal magnetic field. Onset of the modulation instability is realized as a result of tnodification of n~agnetostatic...

Electric field control of magnon-induced magnetization dynamics in multiferroics

We consider theoretically the effect of an inhomogeneous magnetoelectric coupling on the magnon-induced dynamics of a ferromagnet. The magnon-mediated magnetoelectric torque affects both the homogeneous magnetization and magnon-driven domain wall motion. In the domains, we predict a reorientation of the magnetization, controllable by the applied electric field, which is almost an order of magni...

Low-Energy Excitations in 2-Leg and 3-Leg Quantum Spin Ladders

Low-energy excitations in spin2 antiferromagnetic(AF) Heisenberg spin ladders are studied by bosonization and gauge -theoretical description. The AF Heisenberg models on ladders are described by spin2 fermions and the systems are reduced to relativistic gauge theories of fermions by a mean-field type decoupling and linearization of fermion’s dispersion relation near Fermi points. There gauge fi...

Influence of nonmagnetic Zn substitution on the lattice and magnetoelectric dynamical properties of the multiferroic material CuO

Dynamic magnetoelectric coupling in the improper ferroelectric Cu1−xZnxO (x = 0, x = 0.05) was investigated using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy to probe electromagnon and magnon modes. Zinc substitution was found to reduce the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature and widen the multiferroic phase, under the dual influences of spin dilution and a reduction in unit-cell volume. The impact o...

Probing single magnon excitations in Sr₂IrO₄ using O K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the L-edge of transition metal elements is now commonly used to probe single magnon excitations. Here we show that single magnon excitations can also be measured with RIXS at the K-edge of the surrounding ligand atoms when the center heavy metal elements have strong spin-orbit coupling. This is demonstrated with oxygen K-edge RIXS experiments on the...
